Kientzler Riesling Schoenenbourg 2022

Kientzler Riesling Schoenenbourg is a bone dry Grand Cru Riesling from one of the most historic slopes in Alsace.

Schoenenbourg climbs the hillside above Riquewihr, a Grand Cru of marl, gypsum bearing keuper and sandstone that was singled out for Riesling long before the modern classification existed. Those mineral rich soils hold water better than the thin limestone terraces nearby, which gives wines real breadth beneath their acidity. Kientzler work their parcels by hand from the family cellar at Ribeauville, harvesting late for full physiological ripeness while keeping fermentation slow and cool. Bunches are pressed whole, fermentation runs on indigenous yeast in stainless steel and the wine rests on fine lees before bottling without oak. At 2.0 grams per litre of residual sugar it is bone dry, broad in the mouth and firmly structured.

Powerful but dry, it handles richer fish, poultry in cream sauce and aged Comte; serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
