Kings County Peated Bourbon

Kings County Peated Bourbon is a Brooklyn bourbon made with a quarter peated Scottish malt, bottled at 45 per cent.

The story goes that a malted barley shortage forced the distillers to finish a batch with peated malt, and when they tasted the result a year later it was good enough to keep making. To be clear about what this is: not a bourbon finished in a peated cask, but a whiskey that meets the requirements for bourbon and happens to include peated malt in the mash. That malt was grown and kilned in Scotland and now accounts for 25 per cent of the grain bill alongside 75 per cent organic New York State corn. At least two years in new barrels gives it the weight. A hybrid of two traditions, in short.

Robust and flavourful, with caramel and corn sweetness giving way to a lightly smoky, Scottish-inflected finish. Superb neat in a heavy glass. It also makes a killer Old Fashioned or a smoky Manhattan, with apologies to the rye purists.
