Kings County Straight Bourbon

Kings County Straight Bourbon is a pot-distilled Brooklyn bourbon with a high-malt mash bill, bottled at 45 per cent.

The core bourbon here turns up regularly on lists of the best made outside Kentucky, and the reason is the recipe. Eighty per cent organic corn from the Finger Lakes is joined by English Golden Promise barley, with no wheat and no rye at all, which is closer to a Scotch mash bill than an American one. That thinking carries through to the still house: double pot distillation, giving a purer and more flavourful white spirit, and then four to six years in a range of new charred oak barrels. The organic grain and the artisan method together are what make it taste the way it does.

Sweet caramel and fresh vanilla with a dark berry spice underneath, and real complexity for the age. Neat or over one large cube. It makes an excellent Old Fashioned, and a Boulevardier built on it is hard to beat.
