Description
Kir-Yianni Kali Riza Amyndeon PDO is pure Xinomavro from old ungrafted vines in northern Greece.
Kali Riza means good root, a reference to the sandy soils of Amyndeon, which phylloxera never took hold in, so the vines here still grow on their own roots rather than American rootstock. Amyndeon sits at around 650 metres on a plateau between four lakes in Greek Macedonia, cold in winter and moderated by water in summer, and its Xinomavro is lighter and more perfumed than the firmer wines of Naoussa to the east. Kir-Yianni was established in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris. The wine is fermented with a cold soak and matured in French oak for about a year.
Serve at 16 degrees with lamb, tomato-based dishes, grilled aubergine or a hard sheep's cheese. It will hold eight years.
