Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 500ml 2019

Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is South Africa's most famous sweet wine, a modern revival of the legendary Constantia dessert wine of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The estate sits on the slopes of the Constantiaberg, just south of Cape Town, where cool breezes from False Bay temper the summer heat. In its heyday Constantia's sweet wine was sought after by European royalty and was famously sent to Napoleon during his exile on St Helena. Phylloxera and hard times ended production in the late 1800s, and Klein Constantia brought the style back in the 1980s. The wine is made from Muscat de Frontignan left on the vine to shrivel and concentrate, without relying on botrytis, then aged at length in oak. The 2019 is light gold, perfumed with white peach, citrus blossom and orange zest, with a creamy note, oak spice and a seemingly drier balance of sugar and acidity.

Serve lightly chilled, at around 10 to 12 degrees. It is lovely with blue cheese, crème brûlée, fruit tarts or foie gras, and once opened it keeps well in the fridge for a week or two. It also has a long cellaring life ahead.
