Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 500ml 2022

Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is a historic Cape dessert wine revived by the estate, and the 2022 is expressive, layered and finishes long and dry.

Constantia is the oldest wine region in South Africa, founded by the Dutch governor Simon van der Stel in the late 1600s, and its sweet Muscat wines were once among the most prized in the world, mentioned by writers such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Today's Vin de Constance is made from Muscat de Frontignan grown on the estate's granite-derived slopes, picked late and in several passes as the berries raisin on the vine. The wine is then matured in oak for an extended period and bottled in a replica of the historic 500ml bottle. The 2022 shows apricot, quince and dried pineapple, with fig, salted caramel and elderflower, lifted by a refreshing salinity.

Pour it slightly chilled with a cheese board featuring Roquefort or aged Comté, or alongside apricot tart, poached pears or pâté. Its balance of sweetness and acidity means it will also age for decades.
