Description
Kracher Beerenauslese is a noble-rot sweet wine of Welschriesling and Chardonnay from Illmitz on the Neusiedlersee.
Beerenauslese sits above Auslese on the Austrian Pradikat ladder and requires individually selected berries affected by noble rot. At Illmitz that selection is comparatively routine work: the shallow salt lakes of the Seewinkel throw up morning fog through autumn, and the dry, warm afternoons that follow let Botrytis cinerea shrivel the fruit rather than rot it. Welschriesling is the classic local partner for the style, holding a sharp acid line beneath the sugar, while Chardonnay contributes weight and a broader texture. The grapes are picked in repeated passes and pressed slowly, and the wine is raised in neutral vessels so the fruit and botrytis character stay unmasked. It finishes at 136 grams per litre of residual sugar.
Rich yet balanced, it partners apricot and citrus desserts, foie gras and blue cheese; serve well chilled at around 8 degrees.
