Description
Kracher Pinot Gris is a dry white from Illmitz in Burgenland, made by an estate far better known for its sweet wines.
Weinlaubenhof Kracher sits in Illmitz on the eastern shore of the Neusiedlersee, in the Seewinkel, a flat landscape of shallow salt lakes whose autumn fog makes it one of the most reliable places in the world to grow botrytis. Alongside the noble sweet wines that made the family's name, the estate produces a small range of dry wines from the same warm, sandy, gravel-strewn soils. Pinot Gris ripens easily here and gives a wine with weight and a soft, pear-fleshed breadth. It is fermented cool in stainless steel and bottled under screwcap without oak, so the emphasis stays on freshness rather than the heaviness the grape can otherwise show.
Dry, rounded and easy-going, it works with pork, smoked fish, mild curries and soft cheeses; serve at around 10 degrees.
