Description
Kracher Red Roses is a Beerenauslese made entirely from Rosenmuskateller, a rare and deeply perfumed member of the Muscat family.
Rosenmuskateller, literally rose muscat, is an old aromatic variety grown in tiny quantities in Alto Adige and by a handful of Austrian growers. Kracher works it at Illmitz in the Seewinkel, where autumn fog off the shallow salt lakes brings on the noble rot needed for Beerenauslese, and the grape's floral character survives botrytis unusually well. Fruit is picked berry by berry, pressed slowly and fermented to a very high 234 grams per litre of residual sugar, which is well into Trockenbeerenauslese territory in sweetness even though the wine carries the Beerenauslese designation. It is raised in neutral vessels rather than new wood and released in half-bottle.
Intensely sweet and floral, it is best with red-fruit desserts, panna cotta and sharp cheese, or served alone in a small glass at around 8 degrees.
