Description
L'Arlésienne Morgon Corcelette is the only wine in Benoît Moreau's Beaujolais range raised in barrel, blended from two high-altitude parcels on the north side of the cru.
Morgon is the second-largest of the Beaujolais crus, and Corcelette occupies its cooler, higher north-western reach, where sand and decomposed granite take over from the schist of the Côte du Py. L'Arlésienne is the Beaujolais label of Benoît Moreau, better known for his work in Chassagne-Montrachet. The blend takes 0.20 hectares of north-facing 80-year-old vines in the Janins climat at 450 metres and 0.25 hectares in Truges, on the Chiroubles boundary, where slightly younger vines face south. Both parcels are farmed biodynamically, which remains exceptionally rare in this village. The two sites were bottled separately in 2021 and may be again, but hail in Janins forced a single blend here. The ferment carries a little more whole bunch than the estate's Chiroubles, and the wine was raised for twelve months in 500-litre oak, which gives it a tighter, more wound frame than Gamay usually shows, with a long, powdery finish.
Give it a year or two, or decant it now, and pour it with roast pork, charcuterie or grilled mushrooms at around 16°C.
