Description
La Pèira is the grand vin of its estate, a Syrah led Terrasses du Larzac red that carries the domaine's own name.
Terrasses du Larzac lies in the north of the Languedoc at the foot of the limestone causse, whose cool night air drains down over the vineyards and gives the appellation one of the widest day to night temperature swings in the south of France. It is one of the region's more recently recognised crus. Pèira is Occitan for stone, a reference to the limestone scree and rolled galets the estate works. The grand vin is 60 per cent Syrah with 40 per cent Grenache, the reverse of the estate's second wine, and it is drawn from the parcels the domaine rates most highly and raised in barrel. Syrah in this part of the Languedoc, planted at altitude and picked with the causse cooling the nights, keeps a peppery, structured character closer to the northern Rhone than to the coastal south.
Concentrated and firmly structured, it rewards decanting and several years in bottle, and suits roast and grilled red meat and game; serve at around 17 degrees.
