Description
La Roche Paradis Condrieu Veauvignere is a single-parcel northern Rhone white grown on mica-schist, alongside the Lys de Volan site.
Condrieu is a small appellation on the right bank of the Rhone, just south of Cote-Rotie, and Viognier is the only grape allowed. The vineyards are cut into terraces on very steep slopes, most of them on granite and the crumbling mica-schist locally called arzelle, a soil that drains hard and forces the vine deep. Veauvignere is one of those parcels, on mica-schist beside the Lys de Volan site. Yields are naturally low and the grapes are picked ripe, which is what gives Condrieu its weight and its low natural acidity. The estate is farmed organically and the wine is made in the classic manner of the appellation, fermented and matured on lees to build texture.
Broad and textural rather than crisp, it suits roast chicken, scallops, apricot-glazed pork and mild spice; serve at around 12 degrees so the aromatics open.
