La Roche Paradis Côte-Rôtie La Planeze 2023

La Roche Paradis Cote-Rotie La Planeze is an east facing cuvee with a large share of the old Petite Serine strain of Syrah.

Cote-Rotie is the northernmost red appellation of the Rhone, worked on terraces so steep they are held up by dry stone walls. This cuvee comes from an east facing site, which catches the morning sun and keeps the fruit a shade fresher than the full south exposures. The blend is 40 per cent Petite Serine and 60 per cent Syrah; Serine is the old local selection of Syrah, small berried and shy cropping, valued for its perfume and fine tannin and replanted by growers looking for the character of the pre-clonal vineyards. The estate is farmed organically, and the terraced vineyards are worked by hand.

Perfumed and firm rather than plush, it suits game, roast lamb and mushroom dishes; serve at around 17 degrees with a decant.
