La Roche Paradis Saint-Joseph rouge La Madone 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Roche Paradis La Madone is a Saint-Joseph made from sixty five year old Syrah planted on granite, bottled in magnum.

Saint-Joseph runs for some sixty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and its best sites are terraced granite slopes on the steep hillsides above the river, where Syrah ripens slowly and keeps its perfume. La Madone is one of those steep granite sites, planted to vines of around sixty five years, and the fruit is fermented with fifty per cent whole bunch. Both are markers of a traditional approach: old vines cropping lightly for concentration, and stem inclusion for lift and a firmer finish. Élevage for wines made this way is generally in seasoned barrel rather than new oak, which preserves the sappy, granite-driven freshness that defines the appellation at its best.

Medium-bodied, peppery and savoury, it suits lamb, grilled beef and hard cheeses; serve at about 16 degrees.
