La Roche Paradis Saint-Joseph rouge La Madone 2023

La Roche Paradis Saint-Joseph rouge La Madone comes from 65 year old Syrah planted in granite, made with half whole bunches.

Saint-Joseph's finest reds come off steep terraces of decomposed granite, where the soil is shallow and poor and the vine roots have to work. The vines behind this cuvee are around 65 years old; at that age they crop very little and give small, concentrated berries with fine tannins. Half the bunches go into the ferment whole, and retaining the stems adds aromatic lift and a savoury, peppery edge while keeping the wine fresh and firmly framed rather than heavy. Syrah is the only red grape of the appellation. The estate is farmed organically, and the terraces are steep enough that every task in the vineyard is carried out by hand.

Concentrated but fresh, it suits roast lamb, duck and peppered beef; serve at around 16 to 17 degrees after a short decant.
