Description
La Soufrandière's Pouilly-Vinzelles is drawn from the parcels of Les Quarts that do not go into the domaine's single-vineyard cuvée, bottled here in magnum.
Les Quarts is one of the finest sites in the Mâconnais, divided into four historic lieux-dits: Haut, Bas, Le Clocheton and Les Quarts Touches. This wine blends the sections left out of the Les Quarts bottling, from vines of 35 to 50 years — a touch younger than those used for that cuvée — together with a small parcel of Au Bourgeois just in front of Les Bouchardières. The slope lies at 230 metres on classic Bajocian clay and Jurassic limestone, and the Bret brothers have farmed it under biodynamic certification since 2006. The 2022 was vinified mainly in old barriques; the domaine uses no new oak at all, with an average barrel age of ten to twelve years and casks bought used from Leflaive, Lafon and Olivier Lamy. Jean-Philippe Bret expects Les Quarts to be classified premier cru from the 2024 vintage, though this cuvée will not carry that label.
Drink from now to about eight years, longer in magnum. It suits roast chicken, seared scallops or a leek and cheese tart at 10–12°C.
