Description
La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays comes from 0.55 hectares planted in 1971 on the warmer, deeper-soiled continuation of the Les Quarts hillside.
Les Longeays runs on from Les Quarts, wrapping around the contour of the Vinzelles hill as it turns from east to east-south-east. That change of aspect makes it a distinctly warmer site than its neighbour, and it can be harvested as much as a week earlier. The soil changes too: where Les Quarts has limestone lying close to the surface, Les Longeays has metres of deep red clay before the roots reach the mother rock, which gives a rounder and more generous wine than the taut, stony Quarts. The Bret brothers farm the vineyard biodynamically as they do the rest of the estate, use no new oak, and split the raising between tank and well-seasoned barrels. The vines here, planted more than fifty years ago, are among the older plantings on the hill.
Drinking now and good for six or seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a mild washed-rind cheese.
