Description
La Soufrandière Les Longeays is a single-vineyard Pouilly-Vinzelles from a warmer, deeper-soiled continuation of the Les Quarts hillside.
The domaine has 0.55 hectares here, planted in 1971 and farmed biodynamically. Where Les Quarts faces east across a panorama over the Saône, Les Longeays wraps around the contour of the Vinzelles hill as it turns east to southeast, so it is a warmer site and can be picked as much as a week earlier. The soil changes too: instead of limestone close to the surface, there are metres of deep red clay before the vines reach the mother rock. Given that exposure and depth you might expect a broader, softer wine, but the cuvée keeps the saline intensity of the hill, with generosity of extract balanced by tension. Winemaking follows the house pattern, with natural fermentation, no new oak and unhurried élevage.
Drinking well from two to three years and holding eight or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, seared scallops or a gruyère-style cheese.
