La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts 2017

La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts is the Bret family's principal wine, from two hectares at the highest and stoniest part of the climat.

Pouilly-Vinzelles is a small appellation beside Pouilly-Fuissé, and Les Quarts is its most highly regarded climat. La Soufrandière was bought by the brothers' grandfather in 1947 and its fruit went to the co-operative until Jean-Philippe, Jean-Guillaume and Marc-Antoine Bret took the vines in hand in 2000 and began bottling. The estate has been certified organic and biodynamic since 2006, having converted in 2003, and has ploughed with a horse since 2008. Their parcel of Les Quarts covers two hectares at around 230 metres, facing south-east on a twenty per cent slope, on clay and limestone heavily marked with red iron oxide over Bajocian rock, with vines of roughly fifty to eighty years. Hand-picked whole bunches are pressed slowly, fermented on indigenous yeasts, aged eleven months in barrels of six to eighteen years, then six months in tank to fall bright.

It should hold for about ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast poultry, lobster or a firm alpine cheese.
