Description
La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts comes from the steep limestone vineyard that is the cradle of the estate, farmed biodynamically since 2001.
Pouilly-Vinzelles is a small appellation in the southern Mâconnais, next door to the better-known Pouilly-Fuissé, and Les Quarts is its outstanding site. The Bret brothers work the vineyard mostly by horse and have farmed it biodynamically for more than two decades. The soils are Bajocian limestone, high in calcium carbonate and quartz and rich enough in iron to give the rock an ochre tint, with some granitic influence as well. Across most of the slope there is only twenty to thirty centimetres of soil before the roots reach the mother rock, and in places the topsoil can be scraped aside by hand to reveal bare limestone. The massale-selection vines are between forty-five and eighty years old, with younger material declassified into the straight Pouilly-Vinzelles. The result is proudly Mâconnais in its texture and volume, yet cut through with the mineral length of a fine Côte de Beaune white.
Drinking well now and worth eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a soft goat's cheese.
