La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts 2021

La Soufrandière Les Quarts is the founding vineyard of the Bret brothers' domaine and one of the Mâconnais' most significant sites.

The steep slope at Pouilly-Vinzelles has been ploughed largely by horse and farmed biodynamically since 2001. The Bajocian limestone here is high in calcium carbonate and quartz and rich enough in iron to tint the rock ochre, with some granitic influence as well. Across most of the vineyard the soil is only 20 to 30 centimetres deep before the roots reach the mother rock, and in places the topsoil can be scraped aside by hand to expose bare limestone. That shallowness, matched to careful farming, gives wines with the mineral drive to carry ripe fruit. The massale selection vines are between 45 and 80 years old, with younger material declassified into the straight Pouilly-Vinzelles. Vinification is unhurried, and the domaine uses no new oak anywhere in the cellar.

Compact in youth and best from three years, holding a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a soft washed-rind cheese.
