La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts 2022

La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts is the founding vineyard of the estate and one of the most significant sites in the Mâconnais, farmed biodynamically.

Les Quarts is a steep climat in Pouilly-Vinzelles, south of Mâcon, where the Bret brothers have worked biodynamically since 2001 and plough mostly by horse. The Bajocian limestone here is high in calcium carbonate and quartz and rich enough in iron to give the rock an ochre tint, with some granitic influence alongside; across most of the vineyard there is only 20 to 30 centimetres of soil before the roots reach the mother rock, and in places the topsoil can be scraped aside by hand to expose bare limestone. The vines are massal selections between fifty and eighty years old, with younger material declassified into the straight Pouilly-Vinzelles. The result is unmistakably Mâconnais in its breadth of fruit while keeping the poise, length and mineral cut of the better Côte de Beaune whites.

Drinking well now and worth five to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a gratin of white fish.
