Description
La Soufrandière St-Véran La Combe Desroches comes from an organically farmed, north-facing slope at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson.
Saint-Véran wraps around Pouilly-Fuissé in the southern Mâconnais and shares its limestone geology, if not always its reputation. La Combe Desroches lies at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson, on the north-facing side of a steep valley, where the soils are eroded limestone and clay. Jean-Philippe Bret of La Soufrandière notes that the grapes reach good ripeness despite the cooler exposure, and that the soil’s capacity to hold water means the vines perform reliably in warm, dry seasons. Five years of organic farming have added tension to what was already a linear expression of the appellation. Two-thirds of the blend is raised in tank to preserve that tension, with the balance in barrel, and the wine is bottled with a tight, chiselled and mineral-laced finish.
Ready on release and worth keeping for four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, chicken with lemon or a plate of oysters.
