Description
Lalù's Barbera d'Alba comes from San Sebastiano in Monforte d'Alba and is raised entirely in concrete.
Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala buy the fruit for this wine from San Sebastiano, a Monforte site they consider exceptional for the variety, and farm organically across their holdings. The vinification is the interesting part: a third of the crop is handled as whole berries in the manner associated with Leroy in Burgundy, a third as whole bunches and a third destemmed, and the wine ferments and is raised entirely in concrete, where it ages for eight months. No oak is used at any point, which leaves Barbera's naturally low tannin and high acidity to shape the wine. What results is radiant, linear and focused rather than broad, with red fruit, woody herbs and floral lift over a silky palate with genuine depth, and rather more mineral freshness and finesse than the variety usually delivers.
Drink over the next four or five years. Serve at 16°C with salumi, veal, or pasta with a tomato and herb sauce.
