Description
Le Coste di Monforte is Lalù's first Barolo, from 0.3 hectares in the highest and southernmost cru in the commune of Monforte d'Alba.
Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala farm organically and work on a very small scale. Le Coste di Monforte averages 420 metres and faces south, and although its thirty-year-old vines lie parallel to the Ginestra and Mosconi crus, Barolo from here tends to be prettier and rounder than its neighbours, a difference attributed to the unusually high sand content running through the region's Sant'Agata marls. That suits the pair's preference for finesse and openness. Half the crop was destemmed by hand, a laborious method that removes the berries from the stems while leaving them intact on their pedicels, so the wine gains the perfume of whole bunches without the stems' effect on tannin and pH, along with a little intracellular fermentation for lift. To qualify for the DOCG it was aged for three years in large Stockinger ovals.
Built to be enjoyable in its youth by Barolo standards, but worth a decade or more; decant before serving. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, agnolotti or aged cheese.
