Description
Lalù Barolo Le Coste di Monforte comes from half a hectare in the highest and southernmost cru of Monforte d'Alba.
Le Coste di Monforte averages 420 metres and faces south, making it the highest and southernmost vineyard in the commune. Lalù farms just 0.5 hectares here, organically, and the site suits the estate's preference for finesse and openness. Although its 35-year-old vines lie parallel to the Ginestra and Mosconi crus, Barolo from Le Coste is typically prettier and rounder than its neighbours, which is generally attributed to the unusually high sand content layered through the region's Sant'Agata marls. The wine was mostly destemmed and fermented in a tronconique oak vat, spending a month on skins including just over two weeks with the cap submerged. Ageing ran two years in large oak vats from Austria and Alto Adige, followed by eight months in concrete. There is a hint of classy oak, but it does not deflect from the wine's clarity and perfume.
Perfumed and approachable for a Barolo, with fifteen years ahead of it. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, game or aged hard cheeses.
