Description
Lalù Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is a half-hectare organic bottling from the highest and southernmost cru in Monforte d'Alba.
Monforte sits at the southern end of the Barolo zone and is usually associated with dense, structured Nebbiolo, but Le Coste lies higher, at around 420 metres, and faces south. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala farm just 0.5 hectares of 35-year-old vines here, organically, and the site suits their preference for finesse and openness. Although the parcel runs parallel to the Ginestra and Mosconi crus, an unusually high proportion of sand through the Sant'Agata marls tends to give rounder, prettier wine than its neighbours. The fruit was partially destemmed and fermented in a tronconique oak vat, spending a month on skins with just over two weeks of that under a submerged cap. Ageing was two years in large Austrian and Alto Adige oak vats, then eight months in concrete.
Already open enough to enjoy, though it will reward five to ten years in the cellar; serve at 16-18C with agnolotti del plin, roast guinea fowl or Toma cheese.
