Description
Lambert Chardonnay is a Yarra Valley white built from clone 95 fruit at the top of the Denton slope.
Clone choice and slope position explain most of the difference between this and the Crudo: higher up the east-facing hill, thinner granitic topsoil, more sunshine hours, and a clone that ripens early and small. Luke Lambert presses the bunches whole, lets wild yeast start when it starts, and matures the wine in a seasoned 2,000-litre foudre with nothing added but a little sulphur at bottling. The 2024 season pushed the fruit a weight division up from the lean 2023 without blurring the outline. Denton's granite still runs underneath as flint and dry stone.
Fleshier than recent releases, with white blossom, cut hay, citrus oil and a faintly umami, peel-flecked close. There is real power here and just as much tension. Serve at 12 degrees. Match it with roast pork belly, crab linguine or a well-aged cheddar.
