Lambert Nebbiolo 2022

Lambert Nebbiolo is an organically grown Yarra Valley Nebbiolo from a six-clone block on granite.

Halfway up Denton's northwestern slope sits six acres of Nebbiolo, planted to a patchwork of six clones with Mat 3 on half the ground and K6, Mat 9, Mat 10, 230 and 111 filling out the rest. Granitic sand over bedrock is unusual ground for the variety in Australia, and with organic farming and a cool site it is the source of the perfume and the fine tannin. The 2022 fermented wild without temperature control and spent eighteen days on skins with plunging and foot stomping, then eighteen months in Slavonian and French foudres. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Rose petal and red cherry, brown spice and tar, with tannin that grips lightly and a long, savoury finish. It builds with air. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Bring it out for braised beef, mushroom pasta, roast veal or a plate of aged Parmigiano.
