Lambert Syrah 2024

Lambert Syrah is a Yarra Valley Syrah from low-yielding vines high on the western slope of Denton.

Three cool seasons in a row had set a pattern, and 2024 broke it with more muscle. The recipe did not change: thin soil and small crops near the top of the sunnier western side, eighty per cent whole bunches, and Rosalind foot stomping the ferment three times daily through the early days to pop the berries gently and push juice onto skins and stalks. Ferments finish quickly, and the wine is pressed, settled and racked to neutral 5,000-litre French foudre. What the vintage supplied in weight, the handling keeps in shape.

Violet, blueberry and smoke on the nose; the palate is generous and detailed, with juicy blue fruit, orange rind and aniseed folded into fine acidity and long, silky tannin. Serve at 16 degrees. Match it with barbecued lamb, beef ribs, roast pork with fennel or a mushroom pie.
