Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz 2023

Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz comes from very old Barossa vines that were rescued and replanted beside the winery.

The story behind this wine is one of the Barossa's more unusual ones. A block of Shiraz planted in the 1860s near Tanunda was due to be cleared for development, so the Langmeil team dug up the old vines and replanted them on the winery's own land along the North Para River. The 'orphaned' vines took to their new home and now produce small crops of concentrated fruit. The wine is matured in French oak, which frames red and blue fruits, violets and sweet spice with a note of cedar and fine-grained, textural tannins.

Give it time in a decanter and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. A slow-roasted lamb leg with rosemary, venison with a berry jus or hard cheeses will do it justice, and it has the depth to cellar for ten years or more.
