Laughing Jack Augustus Greenock Shiraz 2021

Laughing Jack Augustus Greenock Shiraz is a single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz from a hillside block at Greenock.

The site climbs to 350 metres on the family's Greenock ground, where red-brown earth sits over friable red clay and a calcareous subsoil that keeps crops small and sends roots deep. Hand-picking happened in early March; the fruit was fully destemmed and crushed, then fermented and macerated on skins for twenty days with hand plunging twice a day before going to the basket press. Two years followed in French and American hogsheads, some new and some seasoned, and bottling was done without fining or filtration. Greenock is warm Barossa, but 2021 was a cool year, and the wine is the better for it.

Inky and dense, layering black cherry, plum and blueberry with black olive, bay leaf and a raspberry note from the season, framed by cedar and vanilla oak. Medium to full bodied, brooding, long. Serve at 17 degrees. Match it with a standing rib roast, lamb shanks or a mature gouda.
