Laughing Jack Jack's Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 2021

Laughing Jack Jack's Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre is a Grenache-led Barossa blend from own-rooted estate vines.

By 2021 Shawn Kalleske had twenty-five vintages at the estate under his belt, and the wine reflects how he works: in the vineyard far more than the winery, hands weathered from it. Grenache takes 62 per cent of the blend, with 22 Shiraz and 16 dry-grown Mourvèdre off Moppa. The 1962 Moppa Hill plantings sit on ancient sand with roots deep in reddish-orange clay, while Greenock gives deep red earth; both are own-rooted, low-cropping and farmed organically. Parcels are picked by hand, destemmed and fermented separately as whole berries, free-run and press kept apart, and blended after sixteen months in seasoned French puncheons.

Bright and heavily scented, full-throated in the mouth yet even, with seductive texture and spice-driven generosity through a long finish. Serve at 16 degrees. Try it with lamb kofta, pork belly, a chorizo and chickpea stew, or hard cheese and quince.
