Laughing Jack Jack's Shiraz 2022

Laughing Jack Jack's Shiraz is a Barossa Shiraz drawn from the Kalleske vineyards at Greenock, Moppa Hill and Marananga.

The three sites sit close together and read quite differently: red-brown earth over deep red clay at Greenock, clay and shale at Marananga, and sand over clay and quartz with ironstone at Moppa. Greenock usually leads the blend. Fruit is destemmed and fermented in open-top vessels of three, five and eight tonnes, hand plunged twice a day, then matured for around twenty months in oak that is mostly seasoned French and American with a small new component. Shawn Kalleske and his team have been making it this way for years, and the consistency is the point.

Blackberry and dark plum with pepper and sweet spice, generous through the middle and finishing long and warm. Serve at 17 degrees. Try it with a charcoal-grilled steak, lamb ribs, beef rendang or a sharp cheddar.
