Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz 2021

Laughing Jack Moppa Hill Block 6 Shiraz is a single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz from an outstanding season.

2021 was a very good year across the Barossa, and on this six-acre Moppa block it produced fruit with real density of bramble and spice. The plot was replanted in 2001, the original 1912 vines having been ripped out in the mid-1980s under the state's vine-pull scheme. Sandier soil than Greenock, a couple of kilometres off, is the reason the wines from here lean towards perfume and fine tannin instead of sheer heft. Shawn Kalleske handles it the way he handles everything: hand-picking, small open-top ferments worked by hand, the basket press, then time in French and American hogsheads.

Intense dark bramble fruit with abundant spice, structured and deep, the tannin fine enough to drink young and firm enough to cellar. Serve at 17 degrees after a decant. Try it with a rib roast, lamb shanks, venison or aged gouda.
