Laughing Jack Old Vine Moppa Grenache 2018

Laughing Jack Old Vine Moppa Grenache is a single-vineyard Barossa Grenache from vines planted in 1962.

These vines went into the ground in 1962, planted by Albert and Ian Kalleske, and keeping their crop small is the single most important decision in making serious Grenache out of the Barossa. Maturation happens only in older French puncheons, chosen deliberately to protect texture and minerality instead of adding cedar and sweetness, which is where a lot of Australian Grenache goes wrong. Just 110 dozen were made in 2018. Shawn Kalleske and his family get a lot of credit for Shiraz; this is the wine that shows what else the old plantings can do.

Bright cherry red, with raspberry fruit shot through with fennel and sage. Concentrated and beautifully textured yet light on its feet, with velvety tannin for the long haul. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Good with roast duck, pork and fennel sausages, or a tomato and basil risotto.
