Laughing Jack Old Vine Moppa Grenache 2019

Laughing Jack Old Vine Moppa Grenache is a Barossa Grenache from a three-acre plot on the southern slope of Moppa Hill.

Only three growers work the southern face of Moppa Hill, and this contoured three-acre patch at 350 metres is one of them, planted in 1962 by Albert and Ian Kalleske. Ancient sandy topsoil sits over orange clay and quartz stone, and the old roots go a long way down. Picking is always by hand; in 2019 the fruit was 76 per cent destemmed to whole berries with the rest left as bunches, then given fourteen days on skins in an open three-tonne fermenter, plunged twice a day. Basket pressing followed, and nineteen months in seasoned French and American puncheons.

Blue-floral perfume over red fruit and liquorice, with brooding power, mouth-watering acid and a tannin profile that coats without drying. Layered and savoury. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Match it with lamb shoulder, roast quail, mushroom pappardelle or a charcuterie plate.
