Laurent Roumier Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2023

Laurent Roumier Clos Vougeot is a grand cru from the walled vineyard that gave the Côte de Nuits its monastic template for reading terroir.

The Clos de Vougeot is a single walled enclosure of about fifty hectares, planted and progressively enlarged by the Cistercians of Cîteaux from the twelfth century and today divided among some eighty owners. It is by far the largest grand cru of the Côte de Nuits and the least uniform: the upper section against the road sits on thin, well-drained limestone scree, the middle on marl, and the lowest part near the RN74 on heavier, damper alluvial soil, so the name on the label tells you less than the position of the parcel. Pinot Noir is the only grape. The wines are fermented in small vats and raised in oak barrel with a substantial proportion of new wood, as grand cru status conventionally allows.

Broad and firm, a wine for beef, game and hard mountain cheeses, and one that rewards cellaring; serve at around 17 degrees after decanting.
