Laurent Roumier Hautes Côtes de Nuits blanc 2022

Laurent Roumier Hautes Côtes de Nuits blanc is a high-altitude white Burgundy from the limestone hills behind the Côte de Nuits, made by a Chambolle-Musigny grower whose range is otherwise dominated by Pinot Noir.

Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits sits above and behind the Côte de Nuits, a band of higher, cooler vineyards on the plateau and in the combes that cut into it. Soils are shallow marl and limestone scree, exposure matters far more than it does on the main slope, and harvest usually comes a week or more after the villages below. Chardonnay planted here gives a leaner, more overtly citrus wine than the Côte de Beaune whites, and the best examples come from growers who wait long enough to fill out the middle palate. Whites from these hills are conventionally whole-bunch pressed and raised in barrel with very little new oak, so the site rather than the wood does the talking.

Brisk and citrus-driven, it works with shellfish, chicken and soft goat cheeses; serve at around 11 degrees.
