Le C de Calon Ségur 2023

Le C de Calon Ségur is a third wine from Château Calon Ségur, in the northern Médoc commune of Saint-Estèphe.

Calon Ségur is a third growth of the 1855 classification and the northernmost of the classified estates of the Médoc. Its name comes from the Marquis de Ségur, who in the eighteenth century owned Lafite and Latour as well, and who is said to have remarked that his heart was at Calon; a heart has been on the label ever since. Saint-Estèphe carries more clay in its soils than the communes to the south, which holds water in dry years and gives Merlot a larger role alongside Cabernet Sauvignon. Le C is drawn from fruit not selected for the senior wines, and is vinified in the same cellars. The property itself changed hands in 2012.

It is approachable relatively young, and suits roast lamb, steak, duck or a well made shepherd's pie.
