Description
Le Carillon d'Angélus is the second wine of Château Angélus, one of the most recognisable estates of Saint-Émilion.
Angélus sits on the côtes and the foot of the slope below the town of Saint-Émilion, on clay and limestone that suit Merlot and, to an unusual degree for Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc. The estate takes its name from the angelus bell of nearby churches, once audible across the vineyard, and a bell has appeared on the label for generations. It was promoted to premier grand cru classé A in 2012, then withdrew from the Saint-Émilion classification altogether in 2022, a decision that says something about how the château now sees itself. Le Carillon is made in the same cellars, largely from younger vines. Second wines are drawn from parcels set aside during selection and are meant to be drunk earlier.
Decant it, and serve at cool room temperature with roast duck, beef or mushroom dishes.
