Description

Le Pin is a Pomerol made entirely from Merlot grown on a 2.7-hectare plot at the edge of the plateau, and is the smallest of Bordeaux’s famous names.

Pomerol has no classification and no château culture in the Médoc sense; its reputation rests on a patchwork of small holdings on the clay and gravel plateau north-east of Libourne, where Merlot ripens early and richly. Jacques Thienpont bought the parcel that became Le Pin in 1979, and the property has stayed at a scale most estates would call a garden: around 2.7 hectares of forty-year-old vines producing an average of twenty-five barrels. The soils run some ten metres deep and mix limestone, gravel and clay with a little sand, and they are notably rich in iron oxide, the crasse de fer that Thienpont holds partly responsible for the wine’s character. The estate is now managed by Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont alongside Jacques, with the next generation of the family increasingly involved in the day-to-day work.

Generous young but with the frame to reward long cellaring. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, veal with morels or a plate of mature hard cheese.
