Les Cortis Vin de France Gastine Rouge 2021

Les Cortis Vin de France Gastine Rouge is a field blend of seven varieties from two co-planted, high-altitude parcels in the Belley basin.

Gastine is the estate's field-blend red, made the old way: the vines are co-planted rather than sorted by variety, and the wine takes whatever the two parcels give. Gamay, Chardonnay, Mondeuse, Pinot Noir, Corbeau, Altesse and Chasselas all go in together, red and white alike, from high sites on the moraine glacier soils of the Belley basin near Bugey. Yields in this vintage were low. The red varieties fermented spontaneously as whole bunches for between eight and fifteen days, and everything was blended as soon as possible after fermentation finished. The wine then rested seven months in vat before bottling without filtration. Corbeau, also called Douce Noire, is a near-forgotten Savoie red that survives mostly in plantings like this one.

A wine for drinking young and lightly chilled, it suits charcuterie, roast chicken or a cheese board. Serve at 14-16°C.
