Les Forts de Latour Pauillac 2016

Les Forts de Latour is Château Latour's second wine, drawn from the edges of L'Enclos and from other Pauillac plots the estate has held for more than a century.

Pauillac is the Médoc commune of three first growths, and Château Latour, at its southern edge, is farmed to certified organic standards. Les Forts de Latour was created in 1966 and has been made to a standard many place at Médoc grand cru classé level. The fruit comes from within L'Enclos, the walled home vineyard, though from its edges rather than the centre, which mostly feeds the grand vin, and from other plots in the cru classé areas of Pauillac. Vinification follows the grand vin closely, the main difference being the proportion of new oak at maturation, 50 per cent here against 100 per cent for the first wine. The blend shifts each year; this one is 64.3 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.3 per cent Merlot and 0.4 per cent Cabernet Franc, at a cool 13.5 per cent alcohol.

Approachable from about ten years and good for twenty-five or more; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, dry-aged beef or hard cheeses.
