Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Vire-Clessé 2023

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Vire-Clessé is a white Burgundy from one of the finest villages of the Mâconnais, made to a Côte de Beaune template.

Viré-Clessé was created in 1999 from the neighbouring communes of Viré and Clessé, in the north of the Mâconnais, where limestone slopes give Chardonnay more structure and length than the region is usually credited with. Dominique Lafon, of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, was among the first outsiders to invest here, and the vineyards have been farmed biodynamically since the estate was established. Winemaking follows the Meursault pattern: whole bunch pressing, indigenous yeasts, and ageing on fine lees in a mix of tank and used barrel, with little or no new oak. The result is a wine of real substance for the appellation.

Suits richer fish dishes, roast poultry and creamy sauces; serve at around 12 degrees, and expect the wine to reward a few years in the cellar.
