Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré-Clessé 2024

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Viré-Clessé is an elegant, floral Chardonnay from one of the leading village appellations of the northern Mâconnais.

Viré-Clessé earned its own appellation in 1999, the same year Dominique Lafon of Meursault founded his estate in the Mâconnais. The vines for this wine lie around the village of Viré, about six hectares facing east on clay and limestone soils over limestone bedrock, with plantings ranging from 1950 to 1990. The site ripens reliably, giving generous fruit with good natural freshness. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic methods are used throughout. Native yeasts carry out the fermentation in large foudres and 500 litre demi-muids, and the wine rests on its fine lees for nine to ten months, with no small new barrels to mask the fruit.

Serve at around 10 to 12 degrees. Its rounded style suits richer seafood such as crab or pan-fried barramundi, as well as roast pork, soft washed-rind cheeses and creamy pasta. It drinks well from release and over the following five years.
