Les Quatre Piliers Touraine Ancrage Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Les Quatre Piliers Touraine Ancrage is Valentin Desloges’ first Sauvignon Blanc, made from clay and flint soils above the Loire at Noyers-sur-Cher.

Touraine covers a broad stretch of the middle Loire around Tours and Blois, and its eastern end, around the Cher, is where Sauvignon Blanc does best on clay and flint. Valentin Desloges works here at Noyers-sur-Cher, and this bottling comes from vines on the rising ground above the river. The fruit is picked ripe, deliberately past the point where obvious varietal aromatics dominate, then pressed as whole bunches and fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of tank and used barrels ranging from 228 to 500 litres. Sulphur use is minimal, at 1 g/L at the press and 2 g/L at bottling. The result is focused and pulpy rather than overtly aromatic, with crushed rock, chamomile, sea salt and chervil leading to a mouth-filling palate with grip and stony acidity.

Drinking well now and holding for four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, oysters or a goat’s cheese tart.
