Les Quatre Piliers Touraine Pinot Noir 2022

This is a Touraine Pinot Noir from Valentin Desloges, made from 25-year-old vines in the Quatre Piliers lieu-dit at Noyers-sur-Cher.

Touraine is the central Loire appellation that covers a broad sweep of country either side of the river, where Pinot Noir grows at the cool northern limit for the variety and gives lighter, higher-toned reds than Burgundy. Desloges worked with Raphaël Coche at Coche-Dury and with Thierry Pillot at Domaine Paul Pillot before returning home to take over his father's vines, and the Burgundian training is evident. The vineyard lies on the right bank of the Cher. In the cellar the grapes were macerated for 11 days, then fermented and aged in 228-litre barrels made from oak staves cut in the nearby Loches forest. The wine has tender depth of fruit, redcurrant and spiced cherry moving to something more earthy, with fine, featherlight tannins.

Drink now and over the next five years, with roast chicken, charcuterie or grilled salmon, at 16°C.
