Lethbridge Allegra Chardonnay Museum 2013

Lethbridge Allegra Chardonnay Museum is a cellar-aged release of the estate's flagship Chardonnay.

Ten years in a proper cellar before it reaches a shelf is the whole proposition. The fruit came from Rebenberg at Mount Duneed, a vineyard first planted in 1858, replanted in 1968 by Ken and Joy Campbell, and set to Chardonnay in 1981, making it some of the oldest in Geelong. Gravel and quartz, old wood and small crops, under 12 hectolitres per hectare, are why Ray Nadeson describes the site as giving fruit of unusual density and acid. He and Maree Collis name it for their daughter Allegra, and they release it when they judge it ready.

Ripe lemon, ginger-spiced clotted cream and a savoury, umami undertow: fully developed and drinking now. Serve at 13 degrees and give it a large glass. Match it with roast chicken, a cheese souffle, smoked trout or a wedge of aged Gruyere.
