Lethbridge Block 4 Pinot Noir 2023

Lethbridge Block 4 Pinot Noir comes from a single 1998 planting in the coolest corner of the home vineyard.

Black clay over basalt and limestone in the northwest corner of the Moorabool Valley property gives this block its own character, and MV6 with a touch of 115 does the rest. Picking is by hand, fermentation is spontaneous in open-top vessels, and maturation runs in barrels of which half are new. That last figure would flatten most Pinot; it does not here, because Ray Nadeson has his barrels built to order by one French cooper, light toast and tight grain, specified to encourage micro-oxygenation and soften tannin. A scientist by training, he treats oak as a structural tool.

Deep red fruit and exotic spice with savoury edges, rich in texture but still lifted. Serve at 15 degrees. It goes with duck breast, roast pork, a mushroom and thyme pie or a plate of charcuterie.
